How is your heart? I'm sure you realize by the nature of this blog (i.e. I'm not a medical professional or advocate) that when I speak of "heart" I am speaking of those inner thoughts and attitudes. It is so much easier to fix a physical problem than to fix an attitude problem, isn't it? What is interesting to me is that we think that we can hide these attitudes easier than we can hide our physical problems. But can we really?
Jesus says that "...out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks." (Mt 12:34 NKJV) He also says that it is "Not what goes into the mouth defiles a man; but what comes out of the mouth , this defiles a man." (Mt 15:11 NKJV). Putting these two verses together then, what is God telling us? Is He saying that we better make sure our attitudes and thoughts (our heart) are right so that we don't defile ourselves? I think so. After all, if our heart is the source of our words and the words we speak can reveal our hearts, we better take control of our thoughts.
Taking control of our thoughts is easier said than done though isn't it? We can't just take control of them by suppressing them, however. Suppressing thoughts and attitudes only causes them to erupt later out of control just like a carbonated beverage that has been jostled spew out when opened normally. We must take our thoughts captive at the heart of the matter. How can we do this? Well, really, I don't think we can do it alone. We must involve God's Holy Spirit inside of us to accomplish the task. We must seek Him. We must cry out to God:
"Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me." (Psalm 51:10)
God is in the heart changing business. He has to be or He definitely wouldn't have fellowship with us, now would He? He knows our hearts (1 Sam 9:7) and has given us the tools of prayer and His word (He 4:12) to help us see the areas of our hearts that need to be changed. The "heart surgery" is not a pleasant experience, but is any change process truly pain free?
What is the issue you are wrestling with today? I've got one...no, several, where I need God to give me a change of heart. He can do it if we let Him. Go to Him today and ask Him to reveal your heart problem. Maybe you don't have one, but if you do, be sure that He will show you.
